Emotional Intelligence Assessment

Emotional intelligence — the ability to understand, use, and manage emotions in yourself and others — is one of the strongest predictors of relationship quality, leadership effectiveness, and life satisfaction. This 20-item assessment gives you a profile across four core EQ dimensions.

What this test measures

Self-Awareness: How clearly you recognise and understand your own emotional states.

Emotion Regulation: How effectively you manage your emotions under pressure or in difficult situations.

Social Empathy: How naturally you pick up on and respond to the feelings of others.

Emotional Motivation: How well you use emotional resources to stay driven toward your goals.

Who it's for

Anyone curious about how emotions shape their decisions, relationships, and resilience.

People working on personal development or leadership skills.

Those who want to understand which EQ areas are strong and which offer the most room for growth.

How the test works

20 statements, one per page, each rated on a five-point accuracy scale.

Takes approximately 8 minutes with no time limit.

Your answers go directly to a scoring engine — no account required to see your result.

How scoring works

Each item contributes to one of four dimensions.

Your score on each dimension ranges from 5 to 25, grouped into three descriptive bands: Developing, Moderate, and Strong.

There is no single overall EQ score — the four-dimensional profile is more informative than any single number.

What your result will mean

Higher scores on a dimension suggest that the corresponding emotional skill tends to come naturally to you in everyday situations.

Lower scores indicate an area where deliberate practice can yield meaningful improvement.

This is a self-report assessment, and self-report measures reflect how you currently see yourself — which can differ from how you behave under stress or how others perceive you.

Results are educational and indicative, not a clinical diagnosis of any kind.

Source, methodology & limitations

Source. Items were developed to reflect established EQ constructs including self-awareness, regulation, empathy, and intrinsic motivation — themes present across the work of Salovey & Mayer, Goleman, and the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Scale. The specific items are original to this platform.

Scoring. Five items per dimension, each scored 1–5, summed to a 5–25 dimension score. Band cut-offs (5–12 / 13–18 / 19–25) are descriptive rather than population-normed.

Limitations.
  • Self-report measures are subject to self-presentation bias — it is easy to rate oneself more favourably than one's actual behaviour warrants.
  • Five items per dimension provides a broad orientation only; research-grade instruments use substantially more items.
  • Emotional intelligence is highly context-dependent — scores can vary depending on life circumstances, stress levels, and recent experiences.

This is an educational self-assessment, not a validated clinical or occupational EI instrument. It has not been normed to a population or independently validated.

Frequently asked questions

What is emotional intelligence, exactly?

Emotional intelligence (EQ) refers to the ability to recognise, understand, use, and manage emotions — both your own and those of people around you. Unlike IQ, EQ tends to be more directly trainable through reflection, practice, and feedback.

Is this the same as the EQ-i or MSCEIT?

No. Validated instruments like the EQ-i 2.0 or MSCEIT are used in clinical and occupational settings and require professional administration. This is a free self-report orientation — informative but not equivalent to those tools.

Can I improve my EQ?

Yes — emotional intelligence is widely considered more trainable than general intelligence. Practices like mindful self-observation, empathy exercises, and deliberate regulation strategies have good evidence behind them.

Why four dimensions rather than one EQ score?

A single score hides more than it reveals. You might have excellent self-awareness but struggle with regulation, or strong empathy but lower internal motivation. The four-dimension profile shows where you are strongest and where targeted development would help most.

What does the Premium report add?

The Premium report includes a detailed interpretation of each dimension, how the four dimensions tend to interact in your specific profile, practical development suggestions per area, and an AI-written plain-English synthesis. Price and terms are always shown before you pay.
